Frequently Asked Questions

What is Overture?

Overture is a desktop application for wireless network planning. The problems it helps you solve are known variously as RF engineering, RF planning, RF design, cellular or cell planning, and network optimization. In the wireless engineering world, this sort of software is often referred to as a "planning tool".

Do the RF predictions consider terrain?

Yes, Overture's "Presto" prediction system takes full account of terrain and obstruction heights to calculate signal pathloss. It is fast, accurate, and easy to use.

Can I import sites from a spreadsheet?

Yes, Overture can bring data in from spreadsheets in plain-text or Excel format. Both import and export can be customized to support most formatting schemes.

Does Overture support my wireless technology?

Overture supports LTE, WiMAX, WCDMA, GSM, CDMA, and is flexible enough to easily take account of other technologies or manufacturer specific variations where necessary.

Does Overture support Google Earth / ArcView / MapInfo?

Yes, Overture supports import and export to all major mapping platforms. See the list of supported file formats for more information.

Can I analyze drive test / mobile measurement data?

Overture is not a full measured data analysis solution, but data can be imported for visualization and statistical analysis in any of the supported file formats (including spreadsheets).

Is prediction tuning supported?

All of the prediction models can easily be tuned against measured data. Measurements and predictions can be compared statistically and visualized on the map.

Is backhaul / wireless backbone planning supported?

Not yet, but a backhaul module is currently in development. If you are interested in getting involved with our beta testing program for the backhaul module, please get in touch: info@overtureonline.com.

What's the alternative?

The most popular tools for wireless network design are Excel and Google Earth because they are practically free. However, these tools have serious limitations for RF planning: they do not consider signal propagation or interference, have no technology-specific capabilities, and offer no automation or process guidance. The total cost of ownership for these tools is actually high because it takes a long time to get to an answer that is typically much less accurate than those from a dedicated tool. Low accuracy can lead to under-performing networks with dissatisfied subscribers or over-engineered networks with low returns on investment.

There are many dedicated commercial tools for wireless network design such as ASSET by Aircom, Atoll by Forsk, Planet by Mentum, and SignalPro by EDX. We are happy to list our competitors and encourage you to visit them because we are confident that we offer the best tool at the best price.
